 Summary  The University of Rostock applies together with the Bioinformation Center in Shanghai for funding of an International Research Training Group (IRTG) entitled "Computational Biology in Regenerative Medicine" (ComBio). The IRTG will focus on synergistic scientific excellence in the field of regenerative medicine and computational biology (www.IRTG-ComBio.de). The bilateral research projects will address the analysis of molecular processes relevant to cell differentiation in different diseases. In combination with a systems biology approach provided by the Bioinformation Center of the Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences, innovative methodologies aim at making disease- related predictions on the process of cell differentiation. The Rostock-Shanghai IRTG- ComBio initiative comprises 17 research projects R00-R16 within the topical cluster "stem cell", "oncology" and "autoimmunity". A DFG funding has been applied for 12 Ph.D. projects and two postdoctoral projects. Three additional Ph.D. projects will be directly funded by the Landesgraduiertenförderung of the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Matching projects S00-S16 will be funded at the Bioinformation Center of the Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences encompassing 8 Ph.D. and 2 postdoctoral projects. The experimentally oriented projects in Rostock are highly linked with projects in Shanghai via common work packages (WP1-WP10) defining complementary aspects of computational biology. A LIMS data management system established at the Proteome Center in Rostock will facilitate the computational analysis of biological data with the Shanghai expert groups. The research projects of both partners have been structured in specific Ph.D. Projects. A comprehensive study programme will provide an intensive training in regenerative medicine and computational biology. The study programme is highly interlinked with the research programme and comprises seminar blocks, lab courses, workshops and scientific meetings. From the start of the IRTG each Ph.D. student will be encouraged to interact with the "Thesis committee" to develop a personal study plan. By combining expertise present in Rostock and Shanghai the IRTG-ComBio shall achieve a holistic understanding of human differentiation and disease processes. The study programme, the mobility plans for the exchange of Ph.D. students and a topic-oriented workshop programme will serve as a substantial element of an excellence initiative with the ultimate aim to establish a graduate school at the University of Rostock.
